What's the difference between proofreading and various types of editing?

There are multiple levels of editing--developmental editing, line editing, substantive editing, and copy-editing or content editing (the same)

 Summary of Differences:

Developmental Editing: Focuses on the big picture (structure, overall message).

Substantive Editing: Focuses on content, flow, and logical coherence within sections.

Line Editing: Improves style, clarity, and the flow of language at the sentence level.

Copy-Editing (Content Editing): Focuses on technical accuracy (grammar, punctuation, consistency). Rewrite inaccurate or inconsistent copy rather than just identify errors.

Proofreading: The final check for surface-level issues after all other editing and formatting are complete.
